Binge Eating Disorder Treatment
A specialist programme for recovery.
Hello. Welcome to Orri.
Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is treatable, and recovery is possible.
There’s no ‘one way’ to have BED, however, there are shared characteristics and behavioural patterns that can help with diagnosis and treatment, including:
- Eating uncontrollably (bingeing) and/or fear of eating uncontrollably
- Secretive eating and isolation, perhaps concealing food or wrappers
- Acts of self-disgust and self-harm
- Petty theft to obtain food to binge on
- Perfectionism or ritualistic behaviour / rules
- Depression, and other co-occurring conditions such as OCD and anxiety
- Low self-esteem
- Preoccupation with body image and appearance
We often find that people can feel trapped in a cycle of bingeing and restricting, and feelings of shame, guilt and fear can arise as we experience behaviours that feel very out of our control and not understood.

More than just comfort eating
People with binge eating disorder can often struggle with emotional regulation, and this can manifest in behaviours with food as eating becomes a means of self-soothing during moments of emotional distress.
Treatment, therefore, looks to understand the function of bingeing and restricting, and illuminates the triggers that lead to feelings of acute emotional distress that are challenging to cope with.
Embedding a structure around food and eating is important for breaking the cycle of bingeing and restricting. This may include intention setting and creating plans for certain times of day when someone may confront cravings or binge episodes (such as the evenings).
From a dietetic perspective, we look to understand someone’s relationship to food and address how food can be labelled as “unsafe” or “out of bounds” due to a history of bingeing. In essence, we work together to welcome a sense of safety around food and hunger.
