Parents & Carers Support Group

A fortnightly online support group designed for parents and loved ones of individuals with eating disorders.

Parents and Carers Support Group

Our Parent and Carers Support Group is designed to provide education, practical guidance, and emotional support to those caring for a loved one who is living with an eating disorder.

Being a parent or loved one of someone with an eating disorder is a unique and often challenging role. Witnessing our loved ones struggle can be emotionally difficult, and we may sometimes feel powerless to help.

Eating disorders are frequently described as “family illnesses” because their impact extends beyond the individual diagnosed. They affect all family members in various ways.

At Orri, we believe that involving parents and loved ones is crucial for recovery. Eating disorders affect every aspect of a person’s life, including social experiences, family life, relationships, work, and school. As a parent or loved one, you play a role in these areas as well as in the recovery process.

It is essential that you feel equipped and supported, and this support group is here for you.

Start date: Monday 22nd July 2024

A specialist programme

Our fortnightly support group offers education and practical guidance on how to support a loved one living with an eating disorder, whilst ensuring you are caring for yourself.

While the structure of the groups will be based around themes that arise organically for the attendees, additional topics may include:

  • Communication approaches
  • Navigating meals and snacks
  • Boundaries (knowing when to step in and step away)
  • Self-care
  • Processing your emotional experience

Whilst you might notice some initial apprehension at the prospect of joining a group, this setting allows you to benefit from both the guidance of expert clinicians, as well as the lived experience of other parents and carers who understand your experience.

How it works

The group runs fortnightly, with attendees signing up to 6 sessions across 12 weeks.

The sessions are hosted online, ensuring that they are as accessible as possible around other work and life commitments.

With an exception for those attending Individual Carer Psychotherapy, each participant will attend an assessment to learn more about your experience of your loved one’s eating disorder, and to ensure the group will offer meaningful support to you.

Once the assessment has been conducted, each attendee will join a free, 15-minute introductory meeting with the group facilitator to discuss any questions you may have before joining the group.

An in-depth assessment

Our Carer Assessment is designed not only to understand your journey and the unique challenges you face, but also to provide a space to recognise and acknowledge the personal burdens you might be carrying aside from your care-giving responsibilities.
