Dr Joanna Silver,

Highly Specialised Eating Disorder Psychologist

Dr Joanna Silver is a Counselling Psychologist with a passion for helping people with eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and disordered eating, having worked at Orri since 2022.

Joanna is very interested in psychological research and always uses this to inform her work with clients. Her journal articles examine the experiences of people with BDD and are published in the Journal of Health Psychology, the International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice, and Social Science and Medicine. Joanna has written chapters on visual methods, narrative psychology, and BDD in Carla Willig’s book Introducing Qualitative Research in Psychology (third edition).

Joanna enjoys presenting to her peers and other professionals on topics including eating disorders, body image concerns, and generalised anxiety. Joanna has amassed years of experience working with journalists, writers, and producers across traditional and digital media types. Some of the features Joanna has been included in are: The Independent, The Mirror, The Telegraph, The Guardian, Stylist Magazine, Glamour UK, Harper’s Bazaar, Women’s Health Magazine, and Psych Central. Joanna’s live television work includes speaking on ITV Lunchtime News about the dangers of calorie counting apps, discussing the pros and cons of social media on BBC World News, and appearing on Newsnight to talk about anorexia nervosa in adults.

Before working at Orri, Joanna was the Lead Therapist for Eating Disorders at Nightingale Hospital, where Joanna worked from 2013-2021. Joanna’s role as Lead Psychological Therapist at Orri involves overseeing the therapy programme and ensuring that it meets the needs of their clients.

Joanna sees clients for individual and group therapy and works collaboratively to empower people to achieve their individual goals using evidence-based therapies, including Enhanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT-E) and the Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA).

Joanna is excited to be involved in the Carers Pathway and facilitating groups for carers, as Joanna believes it is essential that the family and friends of their clients are involved and supported in treatment.
