What is bulimia?

Bulimia is an eating disorder characterised by cycles of binge eating, where individuals consume large quantities of food, followed by efforts to purge the food or calories from their system. This purging can take various forms, including self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, fasting, or the use of laxatives and diuretics.

However, bulimia, like other eating disorders, is not solely about food or eating habits. It often stems from complex emotional issues that drive individuals to use food and purging as a way to cope with underlying distress or feelings of inadequacy. The disorder reflects a deeper struggle with self-image, control, and emotional regulation.

While there is no single way that bulimia manifests, there are common characteristics and behavioural patterns that aid in its diagnosis. Understanding these patterns is crucial in recognising and addressing the disorder.

Treatment for bulimia

At Orri, we believe that effective treatment for bulimia requires a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach delivered by experts in the field. Our dedicated team, consisting of psychotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, somatic therapists, nursing staff, and psychiatrists, collaborates to provide a whole-person approach that fosters long-term recovery.

Central to our approach is the interruption of bulimia behaviours, a critical step in breaking the cycle of bingeing and purging. However, we go beyond symptom management by deeply exploring the underlying emotional and psychological causes, as well as the environmental factors that may maintain the eating disorder. This thorough understanding allows us to create a tailored path to healing that addresses all aspects of your experience.

We also recognise the pivotal role that families and carers play in the recovery process. To support this, we offer specialist services and guidance tailored to the role of supporting someone in recovery. Our goal is to empower both individuals and their support networks, paving the way for sustainable recovery.
